Most days I feel fortunate, blessed and thankful for all the amazing people and things I have in my life. But, once in a while, I get stuck with a negative or fearful thought in my mind and really struggle to get rid of it. The problems causing my negative thoughts are usually relatively insignificant but the more I try to fight negative thoughts, the more powerful they seem to become (at least in my head).
We tend to think that obsessing over an issue is how we find solutions. But the opposite is true. The more we think about fear, negativity and lack, the further we get from finding solutions to our problems. Whatever we focus on, grows.
Recently, I stumbled upon the 3-step Choose Again Method by Gabby Bernstein and it’s already changing my life! This method can help you anytime you’re feeling scared, anxious, worried, uncomfortable, disappointed, stressed out or frustrated. It will help you stop the negative thoughts and begin shifting towards more positive and empowering thoughts. From my own experience, the more you practice this method, the more it will become second nature and the more powerful it is.
Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Notice the thought
When you’re stuck in negativity or fear, take a moment to step back and notice that your thoughts are out of alignment with the good energy of the Universe. This step is really important because you can’t change a bad thought, habit or feeling without admitting that it’s there. Ask yourself, “How do I feel right now?” You can write down your answers in a journal. For example, you can write something like: “I’m stressed out because my boss is giving me too much work and I don’t know if I’m going to be able to manage it.”
Step 2: Forgive the thought
The second step is to forgive yourself for having these negative thoughts. If you don’t forgive yourself, your mind will likely hold on to the past and stay stuck on the negative thoughts. It’s also important that you thank these thoughts for showing you what you don’t want in your life and guiding you towards what you truly desire. Feel the emotions in your body. Cry if you feel like crying. Remember that, often, our greatest life achievements come from our most difficult times or experiences.
Step 3: Choose again
The third and final step is to find a new thought. Ask yourself: “What is the best-feeling thought I can find right now?” You can’t go wrong with thoughts of gratitude and there’s always something to be grateful for. You can write down your new thoughts in a journal. For the example given in Step 1, you could write down: “I’m thankful for my job because it enables me to pay my bills, save money and feed my family. I’m thankful that I have a lot of work so that I can challenge myself everyday and develop my professional career.”
The moment we choose grateful and loving thoughts, our emotions and energy immediately shift. This helps us realign with joy and when we are aligned with joy, the Universe responds by guiding us towards solutions.
This method is not designed for you to ignore your problems. It’s designed for you to attract solutions. The best-feeling thought you choose might not be a solution but it will guide you to feel better and to ultimately attract solutions.
I know that this method seems too simple at first, but believe me, it’s powerful. Simply choosing to do something to help you feel better, is enough to guide you in the direction of what you desire. We underestimate the power of feeling good. It should be our highest priority.
Now, I’d love to hear from you. Try this method and let me know if it works for you. Share in the comments below, or send me a message here.
With love,
Adri
